CEO's Report

I am pleased to present our 2024 Report to Society to you.

It comes at a time of celebrating our 26th anniversary and reflecting on how we have remained consistent and focused on our values and vision of a world where everyone has the opportunity to thrive.

Our values have always guided our approach to social investment and the deep relationships that we have forged along the way with business, civil society, government, funders, academia, and other key stakeholders.

These values, which are so important to us, are reflected in our day-to-day work.

In terms of excellence, we continue to focus on delivering high-quality work. An example of this during the past year has been the successful close-out of the R400 million Anglo American Platinum COVID-19 and Unrest Rebuild Programme (CURP), aimed at reducing the pandemic’s impact through investments in health, water and sanitation, GBV, education, and livelihoods.

The programme was launched in 2022, and Tshikululu’s final impact report was presented in 2024. The report highlighted progress in building community resilience and received positive stakeholder feedback. This led to Tshikululu being appointed to manage the ongoing Anglo American Platinum Social Impact Mitigation Plan.

Another value that is important to us is integrity, demonstrating that we are dependable, keep our word, take responsibility for our actions, treat everyone with respect, care about our employees, and have zero tolerance for unethical behaviour.

In this regard, we have continued to make available, not only to staff but to external stakeholders as well, our anonymous Vuvuzela whistleblower hotline to report any instances of unethical behaviour.

Also, in terms of how we care for our employees, we have continued with various initiatives over and above professional development by focusing on employee wellness through the various programmes that we run. These include wellness days, our fitness challenges, our feel-good Fridays motivational blogs, and instilling a general leadership approach that recognises the critical role that employee wellness plays in building thriving teams and thriving organisations.

The third value that drives our behaviour is being a dynamic team, where we approach the challenge of social change with an innovative and pioneering mindset.

We encourage new ideas and the implementation of creative solutions. An example of this is our monthly social impact stories sessions, where colleagues come together to share what is working, what is not working, and what lessons we take from that. Another example of this is our work with external partners to develop and implement new initiatives, such as the Just Energy Transition Funding Platform (JET FP), which is underpinned by pools of funding from governments, Development Funding Institutions (DFIs), and corporates, to improve access to grant funding, particularly for smaller-scale projects and capacity-building initiatives.

These are essential for the successful transition away from coal dependency.

The fourth and final value is resilience. We recognise that we live in an ever-changing and complex world and the importance of responding to competing priorities with mindfulness, optimism, and energy. We believe that it is through pausing, reflecting on our work, and encouraging dialogue that we adapt and grow.

An example of this is where we bring together multiple stakeholders to share best practice, to reflect on our work through dialogue sessions with the Minerals Council, and, very importantly, in the past year, the relaunch of our Serious Social Investing Conference in partnership with Creative Space Media.

Over the past 26 years, our work has focused and continues to focus on social investment solutions that are designed and refined to ensure that our social investment trust and programme management solutions are relevant to each client’s specific context. We work with a range of social investors from philanthropic funds to corporates, including community trusts and BEE trusts. We have always adopted a collaborative, partnership approach with our clients because we believe that through co-creating programmes and investing in high-impact social investment solutions, we will achieve our vision of a world where everyone has the opportunity to thrive. Our collaborative, partnership approach is reflected in our annual client satisfaction score of 92% in 2024, which is comparable to the 96% achieved in 2023.

This report covers a number of highlights during the past year, key indicators that we track in terms of the work we do with our partners, and the relationships we have built over the year.

After 26 years at Tshikululu, and being a part of the founding team, it has been a real privilege for me to lead Tshikululu over the past 16 years as CEO. I want to thank my team members, my Board, clients, and partners in government, civil society, academia, and the funder community for your leadership and support throughout this time. I wish you and the new leadership team at Tshikululu all the best as you continue to deliver real social impact solutions so that we create increasing opportunities for all our people to thrive.
