Johannesburg – The Digital News Transformation Fund (DNTF) has successfully finalized the evaluation process for its inaugural funding call, representing a significant advance in promoting digital transformation and sustainability within South Africa’s independent news sector.
The DNTF, a collaboration between Google and the Association of Independent Publishers (AIP), is managed by Tshikululu Social Investments.
This Fund offers project-based grants and capacity-building initiatives designed to assist South African publishers in strengthening their digital operations, diversifying revenue sources, and enhancing sustainability.
A total of 164 applications were submitted, requesting approximately R163 million. With only R10.7 million allocated for this first round, the competition was fierce.
After a thorough assessment process led by an independent panel of industry experts, 23 projects were chosen for funding.
The selected proposals include thirteen in the Build category, eight in Grow, and two in Engage. This distribution showcases the Fund’s intention to strike a balance between foundational digital infrastructure, growth-stage innovation, and industry-wide engagement.
All selections were made in accordance with the Fund’s objectives and its Board-approved Year 1 allocation guidelines.
The evaluation process was transparent and structured. Tshikululu Social Investments conducted a preliminary screening to ensure eligibility and adherence to requirements.
Applications were evaluated using a 100-point scoring system and categorized through a Red–Amber–Green framework to aid discussions.
Final decisions were made through comprehensive reviews and plenary meetings to ensure fairness and alignment with the Fund’s mission.
“My fellow adjudicators and I committed significant time and effort to thoroughly assess how well the applicants’ projects aligned with the Fund’s objectives for digital transformation,” stated Makhosazana Zwane-Siguqa, a member of the Adjudication Committee.
The recommendations from the Adjudication Committee will now proceed through the final governance process. The Committee’s findings will be presented for Board approval on 10–11 November 2025.
Contracting is set to occur from 12 November to 7 December. Each selected grantee will benefit from training, capacity-building efforts, and monitoring and evaluation programs.
“As the digital landscape evolves and AI transforms content consumption, this fund offers crucial support for independent publishers,” Zwane-Siguqa noted.
“It empowers them to adapt and innovate, ensuring their sustainability and ongoing contribution to public-interest journalism.
“This initiative directly addresses the urgent need for a digital-first transformation, enabling newsrooms to establish strong online operations and diversify their revenue streams.”
