The end of Aids?

3 June 2011

5 June 2011, this Sunday, is the thirty-year anniversary of one date assigned as the “official” discovery of HIV. The Economist believes that it “looks as though the plague can now be beaten, if the world has the will to do so.”

It is the “alliance of science, activism and altruism” that has resulted in the progress against the disease, thanks to behavourial changes and to drugs, that we are able to report today, says the publication. But, new “prevention by treatment” programmes require money and lots of it – this is what must be discussed when the UN meets to discuss what happens next on 8 June.
