Hospice

The World Health Organisation (WHO) defines hospice care as an approach that improves the quality of life of patients and their families facing problems associated with life-threatening illness, through the prevention and relief of suffering by means of early identification and assessment and treatment of pain and other problems, physical, psychosocial and spiritual.

Hospices provide a comprehensive service to the communities they serve. Interventions include awareness campaigns on chronic conditions, home-based care programmes, pain management, symptom control, in-patient units for patients who are terminally ill, programmes for orphans and vulnerable children, support groups for adults and day care centres for children.

The Anglo American Chairman’s Fund considers the support of hospices in South Africa part of an integrated system of care for adults and children infected and affected by HIV/Aids.

Please note that De Beers supports hospice projects primarily in communities surrounding its operations, namely in the municipalities of Siyanda, Ga-Segonyana, Taung, Frances Baard, Letsemeng, Nama Khoi, Kamiesberg and Richtersveld (Northern Cape), and Musina and Blouberg (Limpopo).

The FNB Fund Hospice Programme supports hospices accredited by the Hospice Palliative Care Association, to ensure effective, sustainable, local-level initiatives that promote improved care for people affected by HIV/Aids.
