Bursary Programmes

Bursaries

A bursary is financial assistance awarded to a student for further study or training.  These are awarded for numerous reasons, primarily academic merit and/or financial need.  Some bursaries may have conditions attached, for example, performance targets, employment contracts or commitment to participation within the community.

Undergraduate bursaries

  • FirstRand Fund Strategic Partners programme – support is offered for the further education of mine, energy and construction workers and their dependants through the JB Marks Education Trust, with a bias towards the sciences and engineering disciplines.
  • The FNB Fund Tertiary Bursary programme – support is offered for studies in the fields of commerce, science and engineering.  Support is offered at Honours level for accounting Honours only.
  • Discovery Fund – Support for medicine and closely related disciplines.

Postgraduate bursaries

  • The Momentum Fund Bursary programme – support is offered for full- or part-time postgraduate students with a disability.  Bursaries may be awarded to graduates without a disability. These studies should be in any of the fields of social work, physiotherapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy or disability studies.
  • The FirstRand/Laurie Dippenaar Scholarship for International Post-Graduate Study – a scholarship to the value of R350 000 per annum for a maximum of two years is available to a South African citizen, for study outside South Africa in any discipline at the internationally recognized University of their choice.  Excellence is the only criteria for selection.
  • The Momentum/Dippenaar Scholarship.
