Illiteracy costs SA in potential GDP

Illiteracy costs SA up to R550bn annually in potential gross domestic product, says a report by four Stellenbosch University academics.
The report says: “Policy makers and researchers should pay attention to how SA can obtain nationally representative, objective measures of adult literacy.” It estimates the figure at a “plausible” 75%.

illiteracy is a nightmare that is going to haunt South Africa for many more years to come if one judges by the fact that many (if not most)matric pupils cannot read or write at age-appropriate levels. The problem has to be fixed from the Foundation Phase in order to ensure that the next generation of workers do not suffer the same deficiencies as the present one.
