Substance Abuse

Substance Abuse
The National Drug Master Plan 2006 – 2011 suggests that alcohol abuse is a factor in nearly half of the motor accidents in South Africa, resulting in the loss of some 7 000 lives and a cost to the country of nearly R20 billion per annum. Drug use also has a negative effect on transport safety and up to one third of long-distance drivers admit to using drugs to relax and stay awake.

Particularly concerning research indicates that in South Africa, levels of substance abuse continue to rise while the age of experimentation has dropped to ten years of age. Given the rapid globalisation of the drug trade, particularly during the last decade, no country in the world is free of this growing threat.
