Education

Education
Without young people entering the workforce who are competent in mathematical reasoning, economic growth is inevitably constrained. It is widely acknowledged in education circles that there is a crisis in maths and science in that the learning outcomes in South Africa are way below international averages.

In this sector, the Anglo American Chairman’s Fund has identified three primary objectives: quality schooling, with a focus on primary schools’ teacher development, and management and leadership at school and district level. The Fund is interested in projects that address the challenges in maths, science and language and/or numeracy and literacy, quality education for learners with special educational needs, and improved infrastructure, with a focus on upgrading rural schools.

Please note that De Beers supports education projects primarily in communities surrounding its operations, namely in the municipalities of Siyanda, Ga-Segonyana, Taung, Frances Baard, Letsemeng, Nama Khoi, Kamiesberg and Richtersveld (Northern Cape), and Musina and Blouberg (Limpopo).

The FNB Fund’s Secondary Schools Maths and Science Programme provides access to quality maths and science teaching in secondary schools. Specific focus is on learner intervention programmes that provide quality outreach. Outreach from excellent schools enables less fortunate learners to benefit from the quality teaching and learning provided by these schools.

The overarching objective of the RMB Maths Leadership Programme is to provide access for learners to quality teaching in secondary schools and universities with a focus on the current crisis in maths and science. This is done by improving the quality of teaching of in-service mathematics teachers at secondary schools, improving mathematics results (pass rates and quality of passes) in secondary schools as a result of quality teaching and learning, researching sustainable and practical solutions to the mathematics crisis and providing leadership in mathematics education and increase the dialogue around solutions for the mathematics education crisis. The three specific focus areas are universities, quality outreach programmes and centres of excellence.
